While designing a house, we often ignore a very important issue, child safety. This issue is more serious when the child is small and doesn’t understand everything till now. They are playful and adventurous, and can cause harm to themselves while playing with different gadgets. So, it’s the parents’ duty to take this aspect seriously, and design the house accordingly. Here are some tips, which may help you in making your home safe for your kids :

  • Balconies must be secured with additional grills to prevent children from climbing up and falling.

  • Glassware should be stored out of children’s reach.

  • Ensure that the furniture around the house does not have sharp edges.

  • The gates should be designed for the safety of the children. Pressure mounted gates prevent children getting out unnoticed.

  • Choose toys that are suitable according to the age of the child. Toys with excessive leads could affect mental abilities of the child in the long run. Wooden toys are a safe bet.

  • Maintain a small first aid kit at home with a proper advice from your doctor, in case of emergencies like cuts, burns or mounds.

  • In the kitchen , keep matchboxes and fuel away from the reach of the children.

  • Electrical power outlets should be above the reach of the children. If some power outlets are at a lower level, seal them with a plastic tape or dummy plugs which are difficult for the child to remove.

  • Power appliances with long cords should not be left dangling down. Pulling the cord may bring the appliance down from the height causing serious injury to the child.

  • In the bathroom, store detergents and acids meant for cleaning in a locked shelf above the reach of the children.

  • Maintain the geyser temperature so low that in case a child opens a tap, he doesn’t suffer from serious burns.

  • Wherever possible, dustbins should be kept in closed rooms like bathrooms or utility rooms with door, as children have the habit of searching everything out of curiosity.

  • Keep bathroom doors closed as far as possible, as in case the bathroom is wet, child may slip, suffering severe injuries.
